Goodbye to an Old Friend

My wife and I had to say goodbye tonight. Our beloved friend had been with us since 1999. Sadly, after dealing with congestive heart failure, Paco passed away this evening while I sat by his side. It's a hollow feeling, watching your friend and family wither away in front of you, knowing that there is nothing else you can do but be there to give him one last scratch behind the ear. I wish you could have known him. As dogs go, he was one of the best.

Goodbye, old friend. We'll miss you.

Until next time...

  1. Very sad. We always loose just a bit of our hearts when a beloved pet passes away. I'm sorry you lost Paco.

  3. Really sorry you guys are going through this, Stephen. Been there, done that. I hope he wasn't sick long. Awful to see an animal suffer.

  4. Yes, watching the last two days of his life, and especially the last few minutes, was one of the hardest things I've had to do. Thank you for the kind thoughts, Greta.

  5. Heartbreaking, Stephen. I don't know that there are any words of solace that rise to the sad occasion. I hope you can look back on the good years and remember them warmly. Dogs are special. They take a piece of your heart with them when they romp off to the great beyond.

  6. Stephen, I understand your sadness at losing Paco. My dog, Spike, passed away in 2008, and I still miss him. However, the memories I have of him are with me forever. I hope your memories of Paco will help you adjust to his passing.

  7. Thank you, Carol. There are many fond memories: the sound of his nails on the kitchen floor, coming to greet me; the high-pitched howl as he tried to sing with me; the constant snuggling after I sat down in my recliner. The list is long, and he will always be with me.

  8. Thank you for the nice words, John. As you wrote on Carol's blog not too long ago: Dogs rule.
